As I was not able to cover all the aspects of Markdown in my last post, here the journey continues.

Markdown is the simplest way to add formatting to a document. Most articles that you see in your daily life are born with markdown only. In fact, you can say that every post is posted with markdown format only.

You can use Markdown on your own blog or website. But before that you should choose the perfect web host for your website, like you can make a choice from – Hostinger, Godaddy, etc which will provide you best web hosting in some nominal amount. Now, the next task is to fill your website with high quality content. Markdown promises to make the process simpler.

I prefer using markdown and which use is increasing a lot. There is something unique about it that gives us joy, which makes writing easier and faster. I write in it professionally using Ulysses, take notes in it using Bear, and I’m even considering outlining in it using Outlinely. It is converting into a part of my online life, and now I am not alone.

What advantages does it bring for writers and bloggers? How can it make your writing workflow smooth and easy? What does it have to do with WordPress? Read below to find all your answers.

What is Markdown?

It was created by John Gruber, in 2004 and after it caught everyone’s eye with its demanding features of many new apps, and is used by default on Reddit, GitHub, Stack Overflow and a number of CMSs.

Gruber introduces the concept with these words:

“Markdown is a text-to-HTML conversion tool for web writers. Markdown allows you to write using an easy-to-read, easy-to-write plain text format, and then convert it to structurally valid XHTML (or HTML)”.

Rather than using hard & complex markup language, Markdown makes it easy with using punctuation characters, with a view to make writing and reading simpler

How Markdown is beneficial for Writers & Bloggers?

It is very much beneficial for writers, editors and it can make your writing experience more pleasant, let’s check out how.

Markdown makes writing for the web faster.

The one thing that writers would love is: whenever you write on markdown you don’t have to move off your fingers from the keyboard to add formatting. Whatever you need is under your finger and they just keep on flying.

It is easier than HTML, it needs less keystrokes than HTML. And because it is simpler to use, there’s less to break—you won’t have missing closing tags or improperly formed HTML. They’re all good things. Your writing will be faster and less distracted.

Markdown makes reading content easier.

Content is the soul for a writer and if it is simple to read then what else a writer need. Content in HTML get lost in the code, but you get used to it. Markdown is much better. In fact, that’s its purpose—it’s primarily designed to make formatted web documents easier to read.

John Gruber explains:

Markdown is intended to be as easy-to-read and easy-to-write as is feasible. Readability, however, is emphasized above all else… To this end, Markdown’s syntax is comprised entirely of punctuation characters, which punctuation characters have been carefully chosen so as to look like what they mean. E.g., asterisks around a word actually look like *emphasis*. Markdown lists look like, well, lists. Even block quotes look like quoted passages of text, assuming you’ve ever used email.

Markdown improves the writing workflow

Writers when writing never thought for the form and appearance of the content. When you crunching out words you need proper focus to write the best and doing one thing at a time is the best practice.

Markdown’s simple syntax really helps with this. Lists, block quotes and emphasis almost write themselves, and you don’t get distracted from the task at hand.

Markdown allows you to use plain text, the most flexible file format that exists. You can choose from a large variety of writing software, and Markdown’s features allow all sorts of automation & scripting opportunities. Markdown is making the work load of writers and bloggers very easy and it is a future proof and writers will get addicted to this.
